About us /A Brief History of Mead
We are an artisan meadery and we take great care when it comes to the fermentation and bottling of our meads, after ageing them in oak hogshead barrels. Our Master mead-maker, has been making mead for over 25 years.
For many years the art of mead-making was all-but lost, giving way to a version of mead made by fortifying diluted honey with spirits – historically inaccurate and not representative of a drink thought to be between 7,000 and 9,000 years old.
The Vikings would quaff their mead from mead-horns and even the skulls of vanquished enemies; the ancient Greeks revered mead as the drink of the gods; the Celts and Anglo-Saxons would serve only mead at their month-long wedding celebrations (the word 'honeymoon derives from 'mead-month'); Chaucer refers to it, as does Shakespeare. Mead is the drink of kings, queens; rich and poor; noble and humble.
